🧾 How to Become a GST Practitioner in India: My Application Experience

If you’re planning to become a GST Practitioner (GSTP) in India, you’ll find plenty of articles explaining the eligibility criteria and online application process. However, very few describe what actually happens after you submit your application.

When I applied in 2022, I struggled to find any detailed information about the verification process, personal interview, approval timeline, or what to expect from the State GST office. This article shares my experience to help future applicants understand the process.

Disclaimer: This article combines the official GST Practitioner registration process with my personal experience of applying in Karnataka in 2022. Administrative procedures, interview practices, and approval timelines may vary between states and may change over time.

🖥️ Step 1: Submit Your GST Practitioner Application (Form GSTP-01)

The application is submitted online through the GST Portal using Form GSTP-01.

During the application process, you’ll complete:

  • PAN verification
  • Aadhaar authentication
  • Basic KYC verification

You’ll also upload supporting documents, such as:

  • Degree certificate
  • Marks cards
  • Educational qualification certificates
  • Professional qualification certificates (where applicable)

After successful submission of Form GSTP-01, the GST Portal generates a Unique Reference Number (URN) for your application.

Important clarification: The GST Practitioner Enrolment Number (GSTP No.) issued after approval is the same reference that is initially generated as the URN at the time of application submission. This URN later gets confirmed and activated as your official GST Practitioner number upon approval.

At this stage, the GST Portal performs only basic system validation. Verification of your qualifications and supporting documents is carried out later by the jurisdictional GST authority.

🏛️ Step 2: Your Application Goes to the State GST Authority

Many applicants assume the GST Portal itself approves the application.

In practice, the application is forwarded to the State GST Authority, usually the GST Commissioner’s office having jurisdiction over your place of residence.

In my case, I received a communication from the jurisdictional GST office asking me to appear for document verification and a personal interview. (Mysuru)

Important note from my experience: All official communication from the State GST office was sent to me only via SMS notifications. I did not receive any emails regarding document verification, interview scheduling, or approval updates. So it is important to regularly check SMS alerts linked to your registered mobile number.

📄 Step 3: Document Verification

Carry both the original documents and self-attested photocopies.

Before visiting the office, verify that your name is identical across all documents, including:

  • Aadhaar
  • PAN
  • Degree certificate
  • Marks cards
  • Identity proof

Even a small spelling mismatch may result in delays.

During my visit, the initial verification was conducted by a Superintendent, who checked my educational qualifications and supporting documents informal interview before forwarding my application for the next stage.

🎤 Step 4: Personal Interview

After document verification, I had a brief interaction with the Commissioner.

The Commissioner/Additional Commissioner may be:

  • An Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, or
  • A senior officer promoted from the former Commercial Tax or VAT Department

The interview was short and professional.

The discussion included questions about:

  • My educational qualifications
  • My work experience
  • Why I wanted to become a GST Practitioner
  • How I intended to practice under GST

One suggestion from my experience: if an IRS officer is conducting the interview, don’t be surprised if a few questions are phrased in a slightly tricky way to assess your understanding and confidence. Answer honestly and calmly rather than trying to guess what the interviewer wants to hear.

After the interview, the local GST office retained a physical file containing my application and supporting documents.

📌 Additional GSTP Process Points (Important Clarifications)

To help applicants better understand the full lifecycle of GST Practitioner applications, here are some key procedural points:

🧾 01. Application Stage (Form GSTP-01)

  • This is the initial online application stage
  • Submission is done through the GST portal
  • Generates URN for tracking the application

📜 02. Enrolment Certificate (Form GSTP-02)

  • Issued after successful verification and approval by the State GST Authority
  • Confirms your status as a registered GST Practitioner
  • Contains your GSTP Enrolment Number and enrolment date

⚠️ 03. Show Cause Notice (Form GSTP-03) – Why Your GSTP Cannot Be Suspended

  • A Show Cause Notice (SCN) may be issued if the authority believes:
    • Incorrect information was provided, or
    • Eligibility conditions are not met, or
    • There is a compliance concern
  • The notice gives you an opportunity to explain why your GSTP enrolment should not be suspended or cancelled
  • You must respond within the time specified in the notice with supporting documents and justification

❌ 04. Rejection of Application / Cancellation of Enrolment (Form GSTP-04)

Your application may be rejected or your enrolment may be cancelled if:

  • Eligibility criteria are not satisfied
  • Documents are invalid or mismatched
  • False or incorrect information is provided
  • Required verification is not completed
  • You fail to respond to notices or attend verification

In such cases, the authority will issue an order explaining the reason for rejection or cancellation.

⏳ How Long Did My GST Practitioner Application Take?

This is one of the most common questions asked by applicants.

There is no prescribed statutory time limit for processing a GST Practitioner application. The actual time depends on the workload of the jurisdictional State GST office.

In my case:

  • Application submitted: April 2022
  • Enrolment approved and certificate issued: June 2022

I also remember receiving an SMS confirming the activation of my enrolment sometime later, possibly around August 2022. Since I no longer have the SMS, I cannot confirm the exact date.

Throughout the process, I did not pay any intermediary, consultant, or facilitation charges.

I’ve included a redacted copy of my GST Practitioner Enrolment Certificate with this article so readers can verify the official enrolment date while protecting my personal information.

✅ After Approval

Once approved, you’ll receive your GST Practitioner Enrolment Number in Form GSTP-02

Although the enrolment is issued by your State GST Authority, it is valid throughout India under the GST law. Enrollment is valid until cancelled without an expiry date or renewal procedure.

A registered GST Practitioner can provide GST-related professional services permitted under the GST Act and Rules, including assisting taxpayers with GST compliance and representing authorised clients before GST authorities wherever legally permitted.

📚 My Advice to Future GST Practitioners

Getting enrolled is only the beginning.

A registration certificate allows you to practise, but your reputation will depend on your knowledge and professionalism.

Although NACIN is no longer conducting the GST Practitioner examination, I strongly recommend spending the next two or three months studying:

  • CGST Act
  • CGST Rules
  • Notifications
  • Circulars
  • Advance Rulings
  • Important judicial decisions

If possible, complete at least one recognised GST certification course. It will strengthen your technical knowledge and improve your credibility with clients.
