Relevance, Proximity & Prominence: Three Forces Behind Google Local Search

When someone searches Google for a local business, three factors play a major role in determining which businesses appear in the local results:

๐ŸŽฏ Relevance. ๐Ÿ“ Proximity. ๐ŸŒŸ Prominence.

Understanding these three concepts is important for every local business ownerโ€”and also explains why some SEO tactics may produce short-term visibility but fail over time.

๐ŸŽฏ Relevance. ๐Ÿ“ Proximity. ๐ŸŒŸ Prominence.

๐ŸŽฏ 1. Relevance โ€” Are You Actually What the Customer Is Looking For?

Imagine someone searches:

โ€œBest pediatrician in Saraswathipuramโ€

Google needs to understand two things: what the person is looking for and where they want it.

A pediatrician in Saraswathipuram is highly relevant to that search. A famous pediatrician located several kilometres away may have thousands of reviews, but that does not automatically make the business the best result for a highly location-specific search.

This is where relevance becomes important.

Google looks at information about the business, its category, services, website content, Google Business Profile information and other signals to understand what the business actually does.

๐Ÿšซ Don’t try to be everything to everyone

This is where some businessesโ€”and unfortunately some SEO agenciesโ€”go wrong.

Imagine a shop that sells leather bags.

Someone searches:

โ€œcloth bags near meโ€

Trying to rank that leather-bag shop for โ€œcloth bagsโ€ simply because the keyword has search volume is not a sustainable local SEO strategy.

Stuffing unrelated keywords into the Google Business Profile or website may sometimes create temporary visibility. But Google is constantly trying to understand the actual relevance of a business to a search.

The goal of local SEO should not be to hijack unrelated searches.

โœ… The goal is to become highly relevant for the searches your business genuinely deserves to appear for.

๐Ÿ“ 2. Proximity โ€” How Close Are You to the Searcher?

Now imagine someone standing in Gokulam, Mysuru, searching:

โ€œBest ice cream parlour near meโ€

Google has a very important piece of information: where the searcher is located.

Businesses closer to the searcher are generally more likely to be considered for a โ€œnear meโ€ search, assuming they are relevant to the query.

An ice cream parlour 300 metres away may have a significant proximity advantage over one several kilometres away.

This is the power of proximity.

And there is an important lesson here:

๐Ÿงญ You cannot SEO your way out of geography.

No SEO agency can legitimately move your physical shop from one locality to another.

If your competitor’s restaurant is physically closer to the searcher, you cannot simply create 500 backlinks or add hundreds of keywords to your website and expect Google to ignore geography.

Proximity is one of the reasons local SEO is fundamentally different from traditional organic SEO.

Of course, proximity isn’t a simple fixed-radius rule. The area Google considers can vary depending on the search, the business category, the searcher’s location and other factors.

๐Ÿšซ You Can Buy Visibility. You Can’t Buy Proximity.

Imagine someone searches following in/around Mysuru:

โ€œUnnati Digi Services SEO services reviews, ratings, expertise, testimonials, scamโ€ (the latest search trend is ‘please show me negative reviews’!)

A national SEO agencyโ€”or even a competitor from another cityโ€”can potentially appear above the organic results through Google Ads (Sponsored results) by paying for the search.

But there is something they cannot simply buy:

Our physical proximity to the searcher.

If the searcher is in Mysuru and the query has clear local intent, Unnati Digi Services has both proximity and relevance:

  • Proximity: We are physically located in Mysuru.
  • Relevance: The search is about SEO services, which is what we offer, in a local context.

A national agency may have a bigger brand, thousands of reviews and a much larger marketing budget. It may even buy a prominent position through advertising.

But an advertisement doesn’t change its physical location.

You can buy an ad position. You cannot buy a geographic advantage.

That is one of the fundamental differences between traditional advertising and local search.

For a local business, the objective isn’t necessarily to beat every national company everywhere.

It’s to become the most relevant, credible and geographically appropriate choice for customers in the market you actually serve.

๐ŸŒŸ 3. Prominence โ€” How Well Known and Trusted Is Your Business?

Now we come to prominence.

Think of prominence as Google’s understanding of how established, well-known and trusted a business is.

A business with:

  • โญ Hundreds or thousands of genuine customer reviews
  • โญ Consistently good ratings
  • โญ Regular customer activity
  • โญ Strong online presence
  • โญ Mentions and references across the web
  • โญ An established reputation

may have stronger prominence signals than a brand-new business with very little history.

This is one reason reviews matter so much in local search.

Restaurants, cafรฉs, hotels, salons and other customer-facing businesses often put considerable effort into collecting genuine customer feedback. (read about begging for reviews)

And this is also where the temptation to manipulate Google appears.

Some businesses receive calls from so-called online marketing experts or local SEO companies promising:

โ€œWe can give you dozens of 5-star Google reviews & boost your profile to #1 .โ€

That may sound attractive to a business owner who wants to improve prominence.

But fake, purchased or manipulated reviews are not the same thing as genuine customer reputation. (read about local SEO mistakes)

๐Ÿšซ Prominence cannot simply be bought with fake stars.

A sustainable local SEO strategy should build real prominence:

Real customers โ†’ real experiences โ†’ genuine reviews โ†’ stronger reputation.

โš–๏ธ The Local SEO Equation

A simple way to understand Google local search is:

๐ŸŽฏ Relevance

Are you the right business for this search?

โ†“

๐Ÿ“ Proximity

Are you close enough to the searcher?

โ†“

๐ŸŒŸ Prominence

How established and trusted is your business?

All three matter.

A highly prominent business may not dominate every local search if it isn’t relevant or is too far away.

A business sitting next door to the searcher may not rank well if Google doesn’t consider it relevant.

And a highly relevant business in the right location still has an opportunity to strengthen its visibility by building genuine prominence over time.

This is perhaps the most important lesson.

Local SEO isn’t about stuffing every possible keyword into your Google Business Profile.

It isn’t about pretending a leather-bag shop sells cloth bags.

It isn’t about creating fake reviews.

And it isn’t about trying to manipulate Google’s understanding of where your business physically exists.

โœ… Good local SEO is about making it easier for Google to understand the business you already are.

Be relevant.

Be genuinely close to the customers you serve.

Build real prominence.

That’s a much more sustainable way to win in Google local search.
